COMMUNICATE – at your Peril!
ByWhen you consider that language evolved so we could communicate more effectively then you have to wonder why so many people have so many problems with communication!
Well, you may be surprised to know that it has been said that only 7% of communication is actually the words we use. 38% is the tonality (voice) and a whopping 55% is our physiology (body language and gestures.) This is one reason why texting and emails can be so misunderstood! There is no tonality or physiology in either! Consider that human beings are also meaning making machines. In other words, we put our own meaning onto what we read, see and hear depending on our own view of the world, our beliefs, values and experiences coupled with how we are feeling at that time and what is churning around in our head.
Here are a few tips to start becoming an exquisite communicator.
1. Listen carefully. Commit to being an active listener and imagine that if you listen you may discover a hidden gem in the conversation!
2. Focus fully on the other person. How often have you forgotten someone’s name within an instant of hearing it? Practice getting into rapport with the person(S) you are communicating with. Be subtle in this, and don’t mimic them, but try repeating a few key words or phrases that they say. Try matching their tonality and their gestures. Make sure you do this with integrity. People like people who are like them, so by matching them it can create a mutual bond, or a state of rapport.
3. If you are going into a meeting or an interview, get clear on what you want to achieve, what your outcome is before you go in and make sure you are fully prepared. Quite often people go into meetings unprepared. When this happens, nerves and anxiety often get in the way of communicating effectively. Can you relate to this? Feel the feeling of how you will feel when you have achieved what you want.
4. Know that how you feel will also affect how you communicate and how you will respond to what is being communicated around you. If you walk into an important meeting feeling nervous or inadequate, that is probably what will be reflected back to you. You need to be in a positive and upbeat state (feel good.)
If you want to say, earn more money, whether through property investing, share trading or foreign exchange then you must start to learn the language involved. If you don’t know anything about share trading or what a bull pit spread is, you must do some research. When you expand your language and therefore your references within your own mind, you will be speaking the same language and will be more open to getting more of it back. Oprah Winfrey, who was originally brought up in an environment of poverty said the only reason she knew there was more out there was through the books she read and the experiences she read about. They inspired her to want more than a life of abject poverty.
